Nex Oakland

nex

Just when I get the site redone (above) Nex changes and becomes part of Mua. Sigh.

NEX is the latest restaurant site created for San-ju and Hi-suk (Mua, Soizic, and Pastoral). I love working with them—creative, fluid, non-corporate aesthetic. Yay for that! (Also for the side benefits, he he) This site was built in WordPress so they can update menus, add photos, be “liked” on facebook, etc. I also help managing online reservations and marketing.

my baby driver

I survive heart palpitations  as Colette drives us (shown here approaching Golden Gate road construction) up to Santa Rosa to see Gramma, who is back home and doing really well. Phil took his bike up and came back on hiway 1 via Hog Island Oysters for dinner tomorrow.

Skywalker Ranch

I gave Laine my camera as we checked out SWR while we were waiting for Colette’s BBC broadcast. As we got back they were telling everyone, please don’t leave the building. Woops :) I don’t think this photo will violate this or that. Not like that moment of the birds and the bees and umm livestock that happened before she was able to shoot this :)

111 Minna Sketchy Night

Finally made it to one of these sketch things at Minna. I liked it a lot. Those young kids painting and drawing in front of everyone? In my day we kept all that in the privacy of our own studios. Studio is an out dated word, huh? Bonus points for nice artist who bought me a drink when he noticed I was neglected by all the bartenders :) I hope they raised a lot of money for  Will Draw For Drugs: A Sketch Party Fundraiser for Kelly Malone’s Chemotherapy Drugs and Cancer Treatment Fund

Lighthouse, Cowgirls and Big Ass Trees

Point Arena, CA We stayed in the old light keepers house. View from house (think funky 60’s style )

View of where we stayed from the lighthouse. Great weather for July on Cali Coast.

From the backyard.

Frontyard

Cowgirls

Then on to camping at the redwood nat’l forest. Amazing place, even bigger trees than these.

Kasa Food Truck

We have some great food truck action in the haybro/nopa neighborhood but this one I think is the best yet. Thanks to tablehopper for the reminder. BTW I wanted to try this Limca as a Gin mixer but L drank it all up before I could try it. That’s my girl.

As an aside she was the only one who knew WTF this billboard referred to. Marketing cars to 13 year olds?

shark again and not so decipherable notes to self

Round 2 where everything gets muddy and awkward and second guessing. Yay!

So many thoughts flying around while painting so I jot them down

OK what I can decipher from this part of the list

1.  “Michael Alfe” was a reference to the fact even though really smart people use and recommend something, doesn’t mean that you should too. 30 years later I realize that Stand Oil was great for his painting, but totally inappropriate for what I was doing. duh, I’m slow.

2.” foto realism”.  I like to paint from photos or random scans of things. I don’t project or trace them—something in the process excites me.

3. “lines and edges”. Most of us when painting or drawing will draw a line around stuff. Those lines don’t really exist in nature were everything blurs and reflects. I always try not to, but still I get false lines and edges.

4. I have no freaking idea what Shern Oil ban refers to.

Restarting

After a long break I’m making art and painting in oil again. The smell is soooo good. To make it even easier I’m going to paint whatever I feel like, starting with Laine and gummy sharks. So there. Makes me miss smoking though.

Its weird how natural it feels. I like to start with semi-rough gesso’d canvas and muscle on the first layer of paint with a too small brush. Looks like I used it a leeetle too enthusiastically. Sad brush and canvas full of tiny hairs hahaha.

Lunch Before Art

So I’m dressed in skanky paint clothes ready to crack into some oil painting for the first time in ages so of course all I can think about is lunch. Tried Little Chi but its too crowded. On the way back I run into these boys from Germany and Chile and their new food cart kings of currywurst. They’re on Divis across from Touchless, check them out.

Double Yolk Eggs

I’m so hooked in! Grove Street Farmers Market Egg lady stashed these aside for me to freak out my kids. :) Bonus points to me for saying anything involving “hooked” for extra teen eye rolling.
